New Homeschool Curriculum

In January, we started our new homeschool curriculum. It is called Latter-day Learning and includes  history, science, geography,  art, music, and literature. It is designed so that no matter what the age range of my children between preschool and junior high, they can all learn together. It is based on the teachings of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I love being able to teach my children with the gospel teachings included in all subjects. It reminds me of how I was able to learn when I went to BYU. It doesn't include math or language arts because both of those subjects are very age-related and have to be individualized according to the learning level of each child. I actually just ordered our math curriculum and will be starting on it next month.  It's called Right Start Math and I heard about it from my sister-in-law who also homeschooled. I'm excited to get started with it.
So far, I mostly love Latter-day Learning. I am still learning how to adapt it to our family dynamic. We have decided that we prefer to do each subject all at once as a unit rather than only doing one lesson per subject each week. I think with the age and learning styles of my children that  individual units works better. I've also decided not to get too crazy about making sure that we only take a year to complete the first year of curriculum. My kids are still very young and I believe that they can learn so much in so many different ways besides sitting and doing a lesson. So I'm still trying to find the right balance between structured lessons, field trips , play, and other learning experiences. Right now we are studying history and are about halfway through our lessons.
I have also decided to homeschool year round and take breaks when we need them rather than have the traditional school year. I think this will work better for us and our schedule.
I still want to focus on the Thomas Jefferson Education that I mentioned last year and have recently purchased some more materials to help me better understand it and how to better implement it in our home. They were having a great deal on the  books I bought, so I decided it was the perfect opportunity for me. I'm sure I will post more about it when I understand it a little bit better.
